(n.) a special occasion or period of public enjoyment and entertainment involving wearing unusual clothes, dancing, and eating and drinking, usually held in the streets of a city.

The difference between "carnival" and "festival"

As nouns the difference between carnival and festival is that carnival is a festive occasion marked by parades and sometimes special foods and other entertainment while the festival is an event or community gathering, usually staged by a local community, which centers on some theme, sometimes on some unique aspect of the community.
